Updates before the game against NJ

6:41 PM: The Rangers are using the following lines in warmups (MSG):

  • Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Jimmy Vesey
  • Artemi Panarin, Filip Chytil, Kaapo Kakko
  • Alexis Lafreniere, Vincent Trocheck, Barclay Goodrow

6:31 PM: Igor Shesterkin is in net. Ryan Lindgren is on the ice for warmups (MSG)

6PM: Gerard Gallant spoke prior to tonight’s game and said (NYR):

  • What is it about the Devils this year, “they are a fast, quick, real good hockey team, obviously, with their record, 18-4. They took off, have a lot of confidence and are playing great hockey. Every night they are playing real good, real fast and they aren’t lucky, they win games and deserve to be where they are at.”
  • What does it look like when you are playing the right way this season, “When I watch these guys…they play real fast, forecheck real aggressive and when we are playing our best hockey…if there is a team that plays the way I want to play, it’s New Jersey, the way they are playing. Very aggressive with the forecheck, very fast and quick.”

Updates from the Rangers on Sunday

5:55 PM: Gerard Gallant met with the media following practice and said (NYR):

  • Did you speak with the players about yesterday, “We chatted…had a little video session, nothing major.”
  • Is there a message you can share, “the main message is play tighter hockey, play better hockey in the third period. It’s the same stuff we talk about when we play well we are a good hockey team. When we start trying to protect the lead like we did last night instead of keep playing our game you run into trouble and that is what happened. You go home and watch some other games and the same thing happened in Florida. I listened to his press conference after the game and they stopped playing instead of trying to keep playing the game that they play.”

What Gerard Gallant said after the loss to the Oilers

Gerard Gallant met with the media following the Rangers loss to Edmonton and said (NYR/MSG):

  • Can you explain what happened, “Wish I could…couple of dumb penalties didn’t help it.”
  • On defending guys like McDavid and being beaten by other players, “I thought we played a great two periods, exactly the way we wanted to play and then we come out in the third period and get careless and sloppy and we always talk about putting pucks behind defensemen and making them play in their own zone and when we turn pucks over they end up in the back of the net, they get momentum, we play too much time in the d-zone and that is what happens.”

Updates from the Rangers on Friday

2:30 PM: Gerard Gallant spoke after practice today and said (NYR):

  • How do you look at the first quarter of the season, “It’s okay….not great, okay.”
  • What needs to be better, “you can look at a lot of different things, you could say…I think we played pretty good hockey for the most part, to be honest with you, I think our record could be better and then I look at it and say that we’ve played 21 games and five of those were back-to-back and I don’t think any other team had five games back-t0-back and a lot of travel. Not making excuses, it’s okay where we are at. It could be better, but it’s okay.”
