Igor Shesterkin Rangers

Igor Shesterkin starting against Columbus

6:13PM: David Quinn spoke after practice and said (NYR):

  • On tomorrow, “in a lot of ways it’s bigger than anything we have done up to this point. This game is as big, if not bigger, because of how deep we are into the season. This team is six points ahead of us, we have two games in hand, it’s a four-point game. There are a lot of teams in this league right now that are playing playoff hockey, based on the standings and the schedule, and we are one of them.”
  • Why Igor, “he’s played well since he’s been here and we have a lot of faith and confidence in him.”
  • On Lemieux, “we will see how it goes.”
  • Is Panarin okay, “just a little upper body thing, he’ll play tomorrow.”
  • On Henrik Lundqvist’s situation, “they are not easy discussions but Hank and I have also had good conversations about the situation we are in. It’s players adapting in their careers as they evolve and he is in a situation where he isn’t playing the same as he has in the past, it doesn’t mean he isn’t still a really good goalie and we have faith in him. Our organization feels that we are going to have three goalies here as of right now and just the way it’s evolved, this is the situation we are in. As he and I have talked about, when he gets in there and plays to his ability he is going to play.”
  • On having a goalie not sit that long, “that is the balancing act of not letting a guy sit too long, but also, someone who is in there and playing really well, you gotta win hockey games. We aren’t running a house league team where everybody gets a shift and start, that being said, we feel really good about all three goalies and you don’t want someone sitting for an extended period of time but also not at the expense of someone who is really hot and playing well and providing confidence and a wave he is giving the team.”

12:59PM: Igor Shesterkin will make his third NHL start on Sunday at MSG against Columbus. (NYR)

Shesterkin has been a scratch the prior three games when Henrik Lundqvist (against St. Louis) and Alex Georgiev (Isles) started.
