What David Quinn said after the win over Detroit

David Quinn met with the media following the win over Detroit and said (MSG, NYR Game Notes):

  • On the game, “It was one of those feelings where is it going to be one of those nights where you are doing a lot of good things and the goalie is doing his part on the other end of it. You just have to keep going and getting pucks to the net and getting inside and managing the game. It came happen sometimes when you are having success offensively that you abandon what you are supposed to do defensively because you get in a mindset of spending time in the o-zone. We touched on that and made sure we were responsible regardless of what zone we were in. I thought for the most part we did that and then we went up 4-0 we got a little away from that.”
  • On Panarin, “you get a guy of that magnitude, I said this in the game that he sat but in essence you lose three players when you lose a player like that because his linemates aren’t the players they are when he’s in the lineup. He and Mika have that ability, when they are in the lineup they make their two linemates that much better. It’s nice to have him back.”
  • On Zibanejad, “I can’t say enough great things about him, not only what you see on the ice but away from the rink. He’s everything you want in a player, coachable, a great teammate, plays 200ft, I could go on for a long time about him, we are lucky to have him.”
  • On Buchnevich and that line, “I thought they had a good night and Buchie did a really good job of beating his man up the ice, he just got to the net. I thought Buchie had a good night tonight and it wasn’t just all about Mika, Kreids and Buchie had a good night as well. We’ve seen that play before by Mika where he can throw some deception on his initial rush and throw that backdoor pass.”
  • Why stick with Buchnevich in that spot, “because he’s a good player and we believe in him. He’s been battling the flu for a while, I know people don’t want to hear that but it’s the reality of the situation. He’s a 20-goal scorer and a little bit of chemistry with Mika and earned this opportunity.”
  • On changing the Skjei/Fox pairing late, “they were on for two goals and I thought it was time to get back to the original pairs. It doesn’t mean that I won’t go back to what we saw tonight, just that Brady and Foxy were on for both of their goals and get the original pairings back together.”
  • On putting Howden swapping with Lemieux, “Lemieux had been hurt for a while and then we had the 9-day break. I thought he was a little gassed as the period was going on in the first. I don’t know if he’s quite ready for all of those minutes he was probably going to play. Howden has had a good stretch. I said this to Howds before the game, we didn’t love your game against the Isles and if you go back to what you were doing you will have an opportunity to get back up. It was a combo with Lemieux, who is still working his way back, and Howden playing better.”
  • On Shesterkin, “made some big saves early on, at the 3-minute mark of the first period he makes a great save after we had had some zone time. He made saves when needed.”
  • Do you think Shesterkin will eventually score, “I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get one. He does have that ability, he’s one of those goalies that can. He has poise and the ability physically to get that puck down the ice.”
