5:06PM: Larry Brooks tweets that St. Louis was offered the head coaching job in Hartford in 2017 but turned it down for family reasons.
4:47PM: The Montreal Canadiens have hired former Ranger Martin St. Louis to be their interim head coach.
This is St. Louis’ first coaching job at any pro level.
St. Louis played for the Rangers while new Montreal President Jeff Gorton was part of the Rangers.
St. Louis and Gorton’s children reportedly played youth hockey together.
Adam Rotter: It was long thought that St. Louis, because he’s based in Connecticut and has ties to the organization, would get involved with the Rangers. St. Louis worked briefly with John Tortorella as a PP consultant with Columbus a few years ago, but he never got involved with the Rangers. It was thought that a job with Hartford or in player development would get St. Louis back involved, but instead he ends up going straight to head coach with Montreal. Maybe down the road St. Louis ends up with the Rangers, possibly as head coach, but that seems far away.
