Stats:
- This was a game that the Rangers probably deserved to have, almost didn’t and then the PP came to save the day before the eventual OT winner.
- It was certainly not a lock, especially against an Anaheim team with pretty strong penalty killing, but it felt like a lock that they were going to convert on that third period PP to tie the game. It felt like they were going to score on that PP because if they didn’t, they probably were going to lose against a banged up, young team that they should beat.
- Artemi Panarin has looked off at various times this season, but he has started looking more like himself lately. It’s not just that he is piling up points, he was always doing that, but his passes seem better, his vision seems better and he is looking a lot more like the player the Rangers need him to be.
- Adam Fox also looked very good, which is not a surprise, and was putting a lot more shots on net. The Rangers rely on Fox so much and he’s looked tired at times and his defensive pairing with Ryan Lindgren has slipped to a degree, but he looked refreshed tonight and had a monster game.
- I was surprised to see Alex Georgiev get the start tonight, but he picked up his first win in more than two months. He was fine, which is a step up for him, but I still wonder what his future will be past Monday. I expected that he would get one of the two weekend games, against Tampa and Carolina, but figured that the Rangers would go with Igor Shesterkin for tonight and against the Islanders. Shesterkin will be in against the Islanders and then, I’m guessing, Georgiev will go against Tampa and Shesterkin will go against Carolina.
- Three more games before the deadline. The Isles, who have been playing better lately, come to town on Thursday and that will be a good test. The Isles certainly haven’t been the Isles of the past two years, but it’s still going to be a good test for the Rangers against a veteran, heavy, defensive team. That is really the appetizer though for the big tests this weekend against Tampa and then Carolina.
- At this point it really seems up in the air what the Rangers are going to do by or on Monday. They are going to make some move, but it may be something or somethings of the depth variety instead of someone who could play a regular shift or make a big impact. That could certainly change and the Rangers could part with some big pieces, but some of the big pieces, like Tomas Hertl, may not even hit the market.
