What Gerard Gallant said after the loss in Boston

Gerard Gallant met with the media following the loss in Boston and said (MSG):

  • Did you feel the team was trying to force too much in the first two periods, “I agree, 100%, that is exactly what happened. They play a real good defensive structure game and don’t give you a whole lot and you’ve got to earn it and we earned it a lot more in the third period, but the first two periods we tried to create a little too much, and turned some pucks over.”

  • On scoring and then Boston scoring, “It happens. We wanted to battle back and after the second period we talked about having a real good third period and giving ourselves a chance to win the hockey game and then we scored in the first eight minutes and it was real good and then we had that PP and didn’t generate much in the second one, which was a little disappointing and they get that third goal. It happens, I thought we played okay for the most part and played a good team today, Boston had their full lineup, they got their guys back and they were excited and played well.”
  • Was it noticeable to play a team heading into the playoffs, “Yes and no. They are all games you want to win and I talked about that and I’m really happy with the way our team has played the last 5-6 games because there were teams that are not going to the playoffs and they were tough games to get up mentally and I thought our guys did a good job and today we came in here and played against a real good hockey team. Overall I’m not disappointed.”
  • On Lafreniere, “we had some different lineups today with a couple of injured players, so he went up and played right wing a little bit there in the third period. He’s a confident kid and feels good and he didn’t get a whole lot of minutes today, but I like the way he played.”
  • On McKegg and Gauthier coming in, “It’s tough on those guys coming in, they haven’t played for I don’t know how long it’s been. They gave it their best, they worked hard and it’s part of the game. They gotta stay ready and they know that and that is what it is, playoffs come and you’ve got 27-28 guys hanging around and you gotta make sure they are ready when they come in, I thought they played fine.”
  • On Ullmark’s glove saves late in the second period, “I actually thought both goalies made some key saves and played real well. It would have been nice. Ullmark, his first game in a little while coming off injury, played really well, made some real key saves for sure.”
  • On giving the team a day off tomorrow, “A rested team is a dangerous team and we have a day off tomorrow and then three in four and three more games at home. That is perfect, to finish the season playing at home.”
  • Were you watching Carolina’s game, “we were watching it because you always watch a game and it was 2-0 and all of a sudden it was 3-2, but, again, we want to finish first and win every game we play, but at the end of the day, when the season is over we are first or second and get home ice. It is what it is, but we want to try and win as many games as you can.”
  • What are you looking for from Fox in the playoffs, “Same thing I’ve seen all year. Good, solid hockey and it’s all about team with us. It doesn’t matter what…Adam’s a Norris Trophy winner, makes great plays, is talented, great PP guy, he does it all for us. Just keep doing what he’s doing.”
