2021-22 Rangers

Updates from the Rangers on Monday

6 PM: Gerard Gallant spoke after practice and said (NYR):

  • On the whole roster being on the ice, “full house out there, nice to see…..they’re all game time decisions (laugh). I haven’t…I just got off the ice and once they tell me…I’ll talk to the trainers later today and see how they feel.”
  • On getting them games or getting them 100%, “100% is more important than a couple of games.”

  • What factors into the line combinations now, “Health, obviously. We just said 100% and there are three guys that are game-time decisions. We’ll see where it goes.”
  • Are you looking ahead to any line combos, “Not looking ahead, I’m looking at tomorrow night. They all did a good job today, but I don’t know if they are cleared to play.”
  • Is there overall message to the team with one week to go, “Gotta finish, keep playing well, we’ve played some pretty good hockey. There has been some, I guess you guys would call them meaningless games against teams that are out of the playoffs, but we still played well in those games. Just worry about our game, focus on our game and playing our game and doing the right things and that is what we’ve done for the most part. You are happy as a coach when you see your team play like that, there hasn’t been any big breakdowns, play two periods of garbage hockey. We’ve played pretty solid hockey the last number of games.”
  • On the chance at first place still alive tomorrow, “definitely, tomorrow is a fun game, first place game and we’ll see where it goes. I told you it doesn’t matter if we finish first, I wanna win every game, I want to finish first, but at the end of the day, the end of next Friday where we are going to finish or who we are going to play, that is the important thing and keep playing well because it doesn’t matter who you play, there are eight great teams in the conference.”
  • On the third defense pair, “We have an idea, but it’s close. It’s a battle, close and the way it should be. We are trying to give everybody some games here, we’ll see one game at a time and project our lineup and see where it goes. We’ll see tomorrow and then make some decisions on the back-to-back games.”
  • What goes into the decision with the third pair, “who you think you are going to win with, but it’s a lot of coaches sitting down every day and discussing it. It’s not easy, but you can only play six, well, I guess you can play seven, I’ve done that in the past (smile). We’re not going to, that isn’t the plan.”
  • It’s a good problem to have with too many players, “it’s a great problem to have. Going into the playoffs with hopefully a healthy team. It’s getting closer.”
  • On Vatrano, “He can shoot the puck, I knew that. He’s fitting in good with those guys and playing good hockey. There was no surprise, the guy has played in the league, we’re coaches, we do our job, we have pro scouts who do their job and what they told us he was, he is and what we expected from him.”
