Stats:

Adam Rotter:

  • This was one of those nights where nearly all of the Rangers mistakes and coverage breakdowns resulted in the puck going in their net.
  • The Canucks were giving the Rangers problems in the first period with their speed and pressure, but it seemed like the Rangers had figured things out a bit in the second period….until things broke down with those two quick goals near the end of the period.
  • They played the third period the exact way you’d want them to in that situation. They pushed, they got chances, they got one, but that was it. They had a PP opportunity, but didn’t convert.
  • For a team that has shown they can lock things down defensively and play a certain style, the Ragners sure do have games where they give up a ton of goals. They gave up six tonight, six last week to Carolina, 7 to Toronto a few weeks ago and six against Ottawa the week before. They know how to respond to games like this, but these aren’t isolated incidents that happen once every two months, it’s happened close to weekly, especially if you consider games where they give up at least four. Their ability to respond is one of their best qualities, but they need to figure out why they are having these kinds of games in the first place.
  • Igor Shesterkin had an interesting game. On the one hand, he gave up five goals, but most were the result of wide-open players or blown coverages. On the other hand, if he doesn’t make a handful of big saves at 3-1 and 3-2, this could have gotten even uglier, earlier. Thatcher Demko was the better goalie tonight. I don’t know that any of the goals Shesterkin gave up were bad goals, but the Rangers need him to stop one or two of them in a game like this.
  • They head to St. Louis on Thursday before a weekend set with the Caps.
