Adam Rotter:
- What a win for the Rangers, what a performance by Igor Shesterkin.
- It was special teams again that made the difference for the Rangers. They tied it on the PP, they won it on the PP and the PK remained perfect. Carolina had their PP opportunities and their best chances on special teams came shorthanded on that one Rangers PP.
- But the Rangers only won tonight because Igor Shesterkin was incredible. He was just lights out in the third period and both OT periods. It seemed like this game could have gone on for 8 hours and Igor wasn’t going to let in another goal. The recipe for the Rangers in the last three years has been special teams and Igor and that is what did it again tonight.
- We saw the real Hurricanes tonight. They were quick, they swarmed, they fired a ton of shots toward the net and they were probably the better team tonight…but the Rangers had the best player and he was in their goal. While the Rangers definitely need to clean up some mistakes and limit their turnovers, they were able to withstand it all. Most of it because of Igor Shesterkin, but it has to be a big confidence boost for the Rangers that they saw Carolina play at a high level and they beat them.
- It was another huge game for the Rangers best players. Five of the six in the top-six had points and while Jack Roslovic didn’t, he had numerous chances. But Artemi Panarin, even with the penalty he took, was really good, Alexis Lafreniere was really good with two goals and VIncent Trocheck continues to arguably be their best player in the playoffs.
- This was not the best officiated game, on both sides, and I was a little surprised that they made the call on Skjei that led to the winner. I didn’t think anything was going to get called in OT unless it was truly blatant, like Panarin’s hook, but the refs kept calling penalties.
- Jacob Trouba had a strange night, but nothing moreso than when he went flying and luckily missed Martin Necas. Had he connected with Necas it could have been a five-minute major as well as a big suspension.
- One important thing to remember: Carolina went up 2-0 on the Rangers at home two years ago before the Rangers won the next two and eventually the series.
