The Rangers have called up Brennan Othmann from Hartford.
He has one assist, 6 PIM and 7 shots in four games so far this season in the AHL.
The Rangers are reportedly looking for AHL prospects in exchange for Othmann.
Adam Rotter: I think it’s the right move to call up Othmann but it’s not without risk. He is only being called up because Matt Rempe may be injured after his fight last night and may not go on the road trip, but I also think that they need to give him another shot before making any final decision on his future. The Rangers still need more speed, offense, shooting ability and youth and on paper he brings those things. I’d put him right into the top-six, and give him the chance to prove he can be part of things. Does he deserve a top-six spot after training camp and his start in the AHL? Probably not, but the Rangers need to put him in a position where he can have the potential to succeed and that is the top-six.
The risk is that they do all that, he plays 5-10 games, doesn’t make an impact, goes down to Hartford and has his value plummet even further. It’s a risk worth taking though because if he at least plays at least somewhat well you can talk yourself into keeping him as a third liner and if he plays well then you have solved a top-six issue.
