2021-22 Rangers

Updates from the Rangers on Wednesday

6:14PM: Gerard Gallant spoke after practice and said some of the following (NYR):

  • On putting Panarin and Zibanejad together, “Today they looked good out there moving around. They played well the other night, so we’ll see tomorrow but it’s a possibility for sure. “
  • On keeping them together vs splitting them up, “Well I think if you look at the people that are out, it makes a big difference in your lineup so and again I tried it the other night because we didn’t have much going along the second period and you know that’s what coaches do, I mean you gotta, you got to try and change something up and I thought it went better in the third. And they’re talented players, Bread played Mika, played with Stromer, when we get a full on lineup I like our lineup.”
2021-22 Rangers Vitali Kravtsov

Where some of the Vitali Kravtsov issues started

10/20 | Larry Brooks writes that Kravtsov’s relationship with Chris Drury was not the reason why he refused his assignment to the AHL. (NY Post)

The reason, according to Brooks, had to do with Kravtsov believing that there would not be a spot in the top-six for him with Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko in those spots. (NY Post)

He adds that during his exit meeting last season, the Rangers asked Kravtsov to stay in New York for a bit and “work through a conditioning program designed by the training staff.” (NY Post)

10/19 | In The Athletic, Arthur Staple writes of many issues that have come up in the last few years between Vitali Kravtsov and Chris Drury.

Drury was the GM of Hartford when Kravtsov was first sent down in 2019, went back to Russia and then returned to play in Hartford.

What Gerard Gallant said after the win in Toronto

Gerard Gallant spoke with the media following the OT win over Toronto and said (MSG):

  • On Igor Shesterkin, “He was incredible tonight, stole us a couple of points. He was outstanding style us a couple of points in here tonight, so he was, he was outstanding and Campbell was really good too, we didn’t have a lot of chances, but we had some Grade A chances and he made some real good saves also, but our goalie was outstanding.”
  • What impresses you about Shesterkin, “His athleticism, strong, plays hard on every puck. I haven’t seen him very much, but he just the way he moves in the net and that and he’s always square to pucks.”

What Gerard Gallant said after the win in Montreal

Gerard Gallant met with the media following the win over Montreal and said (MSG):

  • On the game, “it was a great game, battle in the game, a good hockey game, goaltending on both sides was excellent, definitely good to get that first win for the team.”
  • On holding on, “I don’t think we held on, I think the game was played both ways and back and forth, but it’s tough to lose players in-game, especially top players like Kakko, but the guys dug in, dug down and the other guys got a little more ice time.”
