Jimmy Vesey traded to Buffalo for a 3rd round pick

The Rangers have announced that Jimmy Vesey has been traded to Buffalo for a third-round pick in 2021.

The Sabres and Rangers have been linked with Vesey for a while.

Vesey, 26, is a UFA following next season and the Rangers clear another $2.275 million in cap space by trading him.

In three seasons with the Rangers Vesey scored 16 goals, 17 goals and 17 goals.

Adam Rotter: So this ends the Jimmy Vesey era with the Rangers and, to some extent, like his career with the Rangers the return leaves you wanting more. Vesey was a player that the Rangers thought and hoped would take a jump under David Quinn and at times it looked like he would but he couldn’t string it all together. I thought Vesey would get one last crack with the Rangers, and that worst case scenario saw him get moved in a change of scenery deal, but instead he’s moved now for a third round pick in 2021. It’s unlikely the Rangers could have gotten a third-round pick for Vesey during the season, if he struggled, so maybe they felt this was their best opportunity for value. The Sabres had already traded their 2020 third round pick, so that could help explain why this is a 2021 pick. In the end it’s over for Vesey and the Rangers as he sort of splits the difference between when Matt Gilroy signed with the Rangers after college and when Kevin Hayes did the same.
