2020-21 Rangers

Tony DeAngelo scratched, Alex Georgiev in net

6:41PM: The lines used in warm ups were (MSG):

  • Ryan Lindgren, Jacob Trouba
  • Jack Johnson, Adam Fox
  • K’Andre Miller, Brendan Smith
    • Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Pavel Buchnevich
    • Artemi Panarin, Ryan Strome, Alexis Lafreniere
    • Phil Di Giuseppe, Filip Chytil, Kaapo Kakko
    • Brendan Lemieux, Brett Howden, Julien Gauthier

3:52PM: David Quinn spoke before the game and said (NYR):

  • On DeAngelo not being in the lineup, “a lot of things go on that we are going to keep in-house and this is one of them. Tony and I have talked about it, there is clarity on what happened here. It’s the right thing to do and he will be back in the lineup soon.”
  • “You can’t kill eight penalties and expect to win a hockey game. One is too-many men on the ice, one is a misconduct, those are just inexcusable. There are always going to be calls that you don’t agree with, but six penalties, to me, it’s a reflection on a lack of skating and not having the effort we need.”

  • Who will play with Panarin and Strome, “We will wait till game time to do that.”
  • How do you know if Lafreniere can switch to RW, “If we do do that, he is skilled enough and smart enough and good enough to handle it. It is uncomfortable for some people, I think it’s harder for defensemen. On the back end, when you put a defenseman on his off side, the consequences are a little more severe. All of these things come into our decision making process.”
  • On splitting up Lindgren and Fox, “when you have DeAngelo and Rooney out of the lineup, there is a trickle down effect to all of it. What I will say to everybody, a lot of these decisions are like 51 to 49 and when we do make changes, the good news is that I can always go back. I want to see what these D-pairings look like and we did it for a reason and if it’s not working , the good news is we can go back to what we had. Tonight is all about our compete and effort. If these guys compete and trying hard and doing the things they need to do,  yet the combinations don’t work, we go back to Plan B, which we do have a Plan B. It’s easy to sit and wonder if it will work or not, we are going to find out and if in a short period of time it doesn’t work we will go to Plan B.”
  • On sitting DeAngelo, “this would have happened with any player, it has nothing to do with Tony.”
  • On the lineup changes, “the changes we have, really, are more that Rooney and Tony aren’t in the lineup. Most of it is a direct result of having one forward and one defenseman out. Di Giuseppe is going in and what line does he complement? Smitty is going in and he can play the right side more comfortable than some other guys and that plays into the pairings.”

12:54PM: Brendan Smith and Phil Di Giuseppe will come into the lineup. (NY Post)

11:40AM: Tony DeAgelo will be a healthy scratch tonight against the Islanders. (Brooks, Stephenson)

DeAngelo played 15:25 on Thursday but only 1:04 after being called for a holding and then unsportsmanlike conduct penalty early in the third period.

Kevin Rooney, who was hit in the third period, will not play tonight. (Stephenson)
