What David Quinn said after the win over Pitt

David Quinn met with the media on MSG following the win over Pittsburgh and said:

  • On the game, “I can’t tell you how proud I am of our group. It has been a very difficult 24-36 hours. The way we kind of came together, the first period was shaky, we were feeling our way through and I thought we were fortunate to get out 1-0, but after that we got back to doing some of the things we were doing well from the early part of the season and just competed, the blocked shots, PK was huge. huge PP goal, you could feel it on the bench. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you play as one and I thought we did that tonight.”

  • On the third period tonight, “I thought that was our best period. We are learning as we go, I think guys are kind of fed up with the fact that our third periods, even though we had some good ones, we coughed up some leads. It’s early and to go into it 1-1, kill a penalty and played well at 5 on 5 and our PP delivered a timely goal and to get another kill and to hold them off the board, really proud of our guys and a true team effort.”
  • On the tempo in the third period, “I think we went out and seized the moment. I think we started having more tempo in the second, I thought the first….it’s been a tough time. I was just hoping to get out of there 1-0 and dust ourselves off and get back to playing hockey. As the second went on it got better and better and then in the third, I just thought we were playing more intelligent, smart hockey, above the puck a little more, won some foot races, battles along the board. I know what our record is, we have felt pretty good about a lot of things we have done this year, I know that may sound crazy, but we really have. We’ve just gotta continue to move forward and keep building. We’ve got five our of our last six points and hanging around. If we continue to do that and improve and get some guys games back on track, we are going to be in the middle of it.”
  • On the top-six forward, “they came in in a big way in different ways, some of it was PK, some of it was offensive, PP. There are different ways to contribute and I know that everybody just stares at the stat sheet, but I thought those guys delivered tonight, for sure.”
  • Can this win be a springboard, “absolutely. We got 5 out of 6 the last three games, we are starting to get things going in the right direction. Guys felt really good about the win tonight, there was a good feeling before the game, great feeling after. We have to carry it over. We have a day off tomorrow and then we’ll practice and get right back at it. We’ve gotta string together some points and wins.”
  • On Brendan Smith and Bittetto, “Smitty will be evaluated tomorrow, it’s an upper body situation, so we will know more tomorrow. I thought Bitetto played well. You go down to five D that early in the game, it’s not easy, especially for a guy who hasn’t played in a long time. I thought he did a good job, I really did.”
  • On the PK, “We were giving one up, but we were killing three out of four and give up two scoring chances and one would end up in the back of the net, so we felt good about our PK even though statistically we’ve given up a goal or two. Buffalo scored two great goals on us, sometimes when a guy comes back to the bench and asks what happens, you say ‘they have five and we have four,’ but I think Jacques has done a hell of a job with our PK, our guys are aggressive, decisive and making the sacricfies they have to make to have a successful PK and never underestimate the goalie.”
