6:13PM: Gerard Gallant explained the decision as “there was a lot of discussion about what I’ve had in the past, and when Dru told me you know, ultimately you’re going to make the final decision on this and that’s what I came up with so that’s what I feel very comfortable with our group and like I said there are six guys, I think they’re announced and that you guys know them. They are all legitimate captains, they are all good leaders and I just feel very strongly with this group and me being with them for only a month that we’re taking the best direction and that’s gonna help our team the most.”
11:16AM: The Rangers have announced that they will have SIX alternate captains this season:
Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Jacob Trouba, Ryan Strome and Barclay Goodrow.
Adam Rotter: Unless this is a fake out and the Rangers are waiting until Mika Zibanejad is announced during player introductions on Thursday or they are going to announce Adam Fox, this is shocking.
They spent so much time talking about how important it is to have a Captain and now they aren’t going to have one? I understand Gerard Gallant always saying that it takes 23-guys, but they were so direct in saying they were going to finally have a captain.
All of the alternates make sense, though it is a little surprising that Fox isn’t one.
Obviously there is something in how Jeff Gorton, John Davidson, David Quinn and now Chris Drury and Gerard Gallant see Kreider and Zibanejad that makes them not Captain material. There has been ample opportunity for either of them to get the “C” and while it’s not impossible that one day one of them will wear the “C,” it just seems unlikely.
So who will eventually wear the “C” for the Rangers? All signs would point to Adam Fox taking on the role after this season or maybe the Rangers will just never name one.
