What Day 2 of the Draft may look like for the Rangers

The Rangers have the following picks for today’s second day of the NHL Draft:

  • 63: Second Round
  • 97: Third Round
  • 111: Fourth Round
  • 159: Fifth Round
  • 161: Fifth Round

The Rangers acquired 97 and 161 from Colorado yesterday for Alex Georgiev.

Chris Drury spoke yesterday about the Georgiev trade and other topics.

Adam Rotter: I thought that a trade for a forward would happen yesterday and that a Georgiev trade would happen today, so maybe that just gets flipped and today is when the Rangers add a forward.

There were rumors last night that the Islanders were possibly going to get JT Miller for a deal that included the #13 overall pick, but the Isles instead shipped that pick to Montreal for young defensemen Alex Romanov.

Montreal then flipped that pick to Chicago to get #3 overall pick in 2019, right after Kaapo Kakko, Kirby Dach. Dach would have been an interesting player for the Rangers as a 21-year old center still finding his game, but Chicago wanted, at least, a top-20 pick for him and the Rangers couldn’t offer that.

All that means is that Miller is still available if the Rangers want to go after him.

As for what the Rangers will do with their picks today, I wonder if they will try to move out of some picks in exchange for picks next year. They will probably still make their second round pick, and should probably go after a center, but they still have a lot of prospects and getting picks for next year will be important when they try to fill holes next week via trade or at the deadline.
