Pavel Buchnevich OUT against the Islanders

6:40PM: Filip Chytil will start in place of Buchnevich next to Zibanejad and Kreider. Brett Howden will center the third line with Kakko and Di Giuseppe. (Stephenson)

6:11PM: David Quinn spoke before the game and said (NYR):

  • “Yesterday was a difficult day for every team in the NHL and we were no different, that being said it’s time to get back to work and we want to continue doing the things we’ve been doing over the last month and a half. We have a goal in mind and we know it’s attainable and achievable and I think it’s a big sigh of relief from every team in the NHL that now there is clarity and certainty and that is all you really want. Our guys are looking forward for tonight.”
  • “Thoughts on Kreider signing, “….Christmas. Excited, very happy and excited.”
  • On trading Skjei and replacing him, “Sad day, never easy to see a guy go that you have an awful lot of respect for. A guy that has done a really good job for us. Probably not a more likable guy on the team. An emotional day for a lot of people, not only the players but the coaches and everyone associated with our organization. We all know this is a business, we understand that there is only so much money to go around. Not an easy day.”
  • On replacing him in the lineup, “Smitty will step up, he played two really good games when he stepped in last week. He’s had a great attitude, worked hard, played a lot of forward but he’s a defenseman by trade and he gets to play defense for a while.”
  • Will Smith be with Trouba moving forward, “that is the plan going forward.”
  • On the Igor/Buchnevich car accident, “I was talking to Hank about it this morning, what an awkward day it was yesterday on top of the uncertainty of the trade deadline and then Chris’ situation and then you throw that real life moment on top of it all, which put everything else on the back burner. It was a strange day in a lot of ways but very fortunate that it could have been a lot worse and the good news is that they will be okay.”
  • On depth in goal, “we’ve said this all along, we have a lot of belief in all three of our goalies and fortunate to have strength in the most critical position in our sport. There is a very high level of confidence in our locker room that we aren’t going to miss a beat.”

5:30PM: Pavel Buchnevich will miss tonight’s game against the Islanders as he recovers from the car accident he and Igor Shesterkin were in on Sunday. (NYR)
