3:28PM: The Montreal Canadiens have “retained the services” of Jeff Gorton to be Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations.
Montreal just fired GM Marc Bergevin as well as assistant GM Trevor Timmins.
Gorton’s role will be to “assure the continuity of the day-to-day hockey operations” while they search for a GM that will be able “to communicate with fans in both French and English.”
Adam Rotter: We will find out more tomorrow when Montreal’s owner, and presumably Gorton, meet the media, but the phrase “retained the services” that was in the press release makes it seem like a temporary thing. Maybe it lasts through the search for a new GM, maybe it’s only through the year or maybe he has a multi-year contract and it’s just a weird way of phrasing it. In any event, Gorton is, at least for the moment, back in charge of an NHL team.
If Gorton does get the full run of hockey operations it will be interesting to see what he and the next GM do with this team.
