Rangers officially announce Peca, Housley and Muse as part of coaching staff

The Rangers have announced that Phil Housley will join Peter Laviolette’s staff as Associate coach and that  Micahel Peca and Dan Muse will join as assistant coaches.

The Rangers did not specify which roles each coach will have.

Housley was an assistant to Laviolette in Nashville from 2013-2017, Muse was with Laviolette in Nashville for three seasons and Peca was the captain for Laviolette with the Islanders and was a development coach with Laviolette and the Capitals in 2020-21.

Adam Rotter: This is a pretty interesting staff. Housley is certainly someone that comes with a Hall of Fame resume as a defenseman and an extensive coaching career, even with his two unsuccessful seasons in Buffalo. Muse, on paper, seems like a Kris Knoblauch-type of a youngish coach who has had success in the past. Peca is the really interesting one. He doesn’t have an extensive resume as a coach, especially with only one year as a development coach in the NHL, but he brings leadership and a past as a tenacious, hard-to-play against two-time Selke winner. As a player he played the style that Laviolette wants the Rangers to play. How he can translate his time as a player into bringing that to both the Rangers young players and the team overall remains to be seen, but he seems like someone that could be a fast riser in coaching circles if he has some success.

It’s three guys that Laviolette has worked with at different times and in different roles, but it’s nice to see four new voices and four new viewpoints on how the Rangers can get to the next level.
