Stats:

Adam Rotter:

  • That, much like the Stadium Series game last season, turned into a real fun game in the last few minutes.
  • The story coming out of this game sure seemed like it was going to be Filip Chyti tearing his ACL or dealing with a brutal injury….and then he returned, played and scored in the third period. It just seemed like it was going to be another lost season for Chytil, but it clearly wasn’t as bad as it looked or even bad enough to keep him out for precautionary reasons.
  • Ryan Lindgren seemed to get hurt while fighting after Chytil got hurt and never returned and then Artemi Panarin only played two shifts in the third period. Hopefully they are both fine and just stopped playing for precautionary reasons.
  • Zac Jones came into training camp with what seemed like the upper hand to get that last spot on defense and he did nothing tonight to change that. The question with Jones the last few years was whether he could provide enough offense on the third pair to offset some of his potential defensive limitations. That remains a question but can hopefully be mitigated to some extent if he’s paired with Jacob Trouba or Braden Schneider. I think he should get a run on the third pair and QB of the second PP to start the season. Erik Gustafsson was effective at times last season as a similar, albeit bigger, kind of player and hopefully Jones can do some of the same.
  • There is understandably a lot of hype and hope that Matt Rempe can develop into a regular NHLer and I thought he  was fine tonight. It would be a surprise if Rempe didn’t start the season in the NHL, but Adam Edstrom is going to push him. It’s not crazy to imagine the Rangers having a future bottom-six with both Edstrom and Rempe, but unless injuries force it, I’m not sure there is room for both, at least to start the season.
  • We got our first look at Reilly Smith on a line with Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider. Nothing really jumped off the ice with them, but not much did for the Rangers until the third period.
  • Preseason or not it was nice to see the Rangers showing that resilience and ability to come back.
