Jack Johnson had sports hernia surgery and is out for the season

5:14PM: The Rangers have confirmed that Johnson underwent “core muscle” surgery and will be out for the season. (NYR)

2:50 PM: Darren Dreger tweets that Rangers defenseman Jack Johnson had sports hernia surgery yesterday.

Dreger says that Johnson is expected to make a “full recovery by June/July.”

Johnson has been bothered by a lower-body injury for most of the season. David Quinn called him a “warrior” earlier this month for how he played through the injury.

  • On the defensive effort, “I think guys were feeling very confident after the Philadelphia game, enjoying hockey scoring some goals, everyone feels better and they just wanted to carry that on and they knew they were going to have to have a solid effort because Washington is a good hockey team and been playing extremely well. I think they were really committed to winning this game.”

  • On what is going on, “I’ve had a little bit of time to reflect on what happened and it feels more like a regular coaching day where we just finish the game, review it on video, talk with the assistants, mostly Gord Murphy and myself, but we’ve also talked to Quinny a little bit, mostly just preparing for what kind of practice this should be, looking at the scheduled, who we are playing, what do we want to do and then move forward getting prepared to play Washington. We’ll contact again, probably before I get on the flight to Washington and discuss a game plan and go over video of what our game plan will be.”

  • On everything happening today, “it’s been busy. I had practice with my team, we are on the ice at 10:30AM, I got pulled off about 11:30AM, I got the message saying ‘call Dru ASAP’ and usually when I hear that it’s not good, it’s usually taking players away from our team, but I got the call to be on stand by, you might be coaching tonight, we will let you know. That was 11:30AM and I think it was confirmed around 1PM that I was gonna coach tonight.”
