What David Quinn said after the win over the Isles

David Quinn met with the media on MSG following the win over the Isles and said:

  • On the game, “felt like a playoff game in a lot of ways, just an incredibly fast paced game, incredibly intense. One of the things I thought tonight was that we had it between the ears and between the legs and some guys were sluggish but we really managed the game well. I really liked our third period until we took the penalty and it’s 3-2 and then the whole momentum changed in the third. I liked how we fought back and had a good second period. Listen, it’s a great building, they thrive on their crowd here and it kind of did to us in the first, though a better first for us than last time. We managed the game which we have done a much better job of in the last two months, just a great feeling for our guys and another big big road win.”
  • On Panarin and ZIbanejad in OT, “that is what your top guys have to do and they delivered as they usually do.”
  • On Georgiev, “at this time of the year, any team that wins in the NHL, your goalie better be good and our guy was really good tonight.”
  • How important are these games for the kids, “immense, I love the way they respond so far. This is Islander/Ranger playoff type hockey. I liked Kakko’s game, boy Fox and Lindgren were good, Howden had a big night. Trouba might have had his best game as a Ranger. Just so many guys up and down the lineup that contributed. It wasn’t an easy game, we didn’t have it, we weren’t clicking on all cylinders physically but we were where it mattered.”
  • On how the team responded now compared to earlier, “for sure, we never get down, we never waver. We are up 2-1 going to the third and we kept playing. We didn’t back off, unfortunate that they get the second goal, on the PP up 3-1 and what unfolds is disappointing. They are a good hockey team, they are fighting for playoff positioning and playoff spots. It’s just a great win for us.”
  • Why so successful on the road, “we just don’t care about the venue. I’ve said this a lot over the past two months, we’ve really become a team. We really have and you can feel it in there. Yesterday was a very difficult day for a lot of teams and a very difficult day for our guys, the wondering, the uncertainty about Fast and Kreider and other guys and the car crash and Brady getting traded. It was a tough emotional day, exhausting day for every team in this league but when you are the youngest team in the league it might be a little more exhausting for you. We are a close knit group and that happened in a short period of time.”
  • On moving Chytil to the wing, “I had to put somebody there and I thought he was the guy to do it. I felt comfortable with Howden going back to the middle and when we looked at all our options we thought that was our best option. He’s a hockey player and a damn good one.”
  • What did you learn tonight, “what we already knew, we’ve got it between the ears now and we didn’t have the mental toughness, the resiliency or enough of it when the season started, I’ve said this a lot. When a group gets together you have to collectively acquire all of these characteristics, it just doesn’t happen overnight. You as an individual may have these characteristics but the group has to acquire them and our guys have acquired them and we’ve put ourselves in a great position. I don’t know how many people here thought we’d be in this position, but we are. Nobody inside the walls of the locker room are surprised and neither is the staff.”
  • On Smith, “great game by Smitty, played really well, really happy for him.”
