At tonight’s NHL Draft Lottery the Rangers have the 16th best odds, 1%, at getting the first overall pick.
The Rangers will either pick #1, #2 or 16th* overall.
The NHL will only hold drawings for the #1 and #2 picks as opposed to the three lottery drawings they have in prior years.
*Arizona forfeited their 2021 First Round Pick so while the Rangers, if they don’t win the lottery, would still technically have the #16 overall pick they would actually be selecting the 15th player. The league will do a re-draw if Arizona wins either lottery spot.
The Rangers are slated to have the following picks in the 2021 Draft:
- First Round: 1
- Second Round: Traded it with Marc Staal to Detroit
- Third Round: 2 (NYR and Buffalo)
- Fourth Round: 3 (NYR, Ottawa, LA)
- Fifth Round: 1
- Sixth Round: 1
- Seventh Round: 1
Adam Rotter: Since the Rangers have the lowest odds we will know right away whether they will have the 16th pick, but technically the 15th selection, or whether it will be three years in a row inside the top-2.
I think that in almost any event the Rangers are more likely to trade this pick than add another prospect. The Rangers have had 8 first round picks in the past four drafts, five of them played regular minutes last season, Nils Lundkvist and Braden Schneider will be in training camp and the 8th is, of course, Lias Andersson. There is still a need at center and the Rangers can try to address that by trading this pick for someone at the same type of development spot as Filip Chytil or someone who is closer to NHL ready. Trading the pick would leave the Rangers without first or second round picks, but they do have the first pick in the third round and two selections within the first ten picks of the 4th round.
