What Gerard Gallant said after the loss to Vancouver

Gerard Gallant met with the media following the Rangers OT loss in Vancouver and said (NYR):

  • Did you play well enough to win, “yea, definitely. The goaltending was good, again, tonight at both ends. It was disappointing…..the PP was okay, I mean they had two goals,  but the 5 on 3 we had a couple of real great chances and Denko made some unbelievable saves. It was a good game, it’s tough to lose in the OT like that, they made a great play, we had a great scoring chance before that. We battled hard.”

  • On the first period, “for the most part I liked the way we played, we didn’t give up a whole lot in the first period, and for the most part in the game, I like the way we played.”
  • On the shift after they tied it, “definitely, we had to settle down a little bit, I mean coming into the third period you knew they were going to have a push and they had two real nice goals, they made some real good plays and like you said, the fourth goes out there and they’ve done that for us this year, they’ve played good, played hard.”
  • On the PK, “yea, it was awesome. They did a great job. I think we killed three in a row in the second period that was back to back to back and that was huge for our group.”
  • Was Kakko not on the PK as much, “no, it’s just other guys, I mean Kegger is doing a good job there and that is their roles and Kakko seemed to be up every time, he comes on the next shift usually. Usually him and Panarin are coming back as a fourth pair and Panarin don’t kill many penalties, but usually they’re pretty close to done when that comes on. We’ve got confidence in Kakko, there is no issue there, just the other guys are role players and that is what they are doing.”
  • On the 5 on 3, “you gotta give Vancouver credit, they blocked a lot of shots and I think he lost his stick and his blocker, so he made a couple of key saves, but again, guys are shooting the puck. I like when Panarin is shooting the puck like he was tonight and one went in and the others got blocked.”
  • Can you learn from giving up the lead, “we just gotta keep our foot on the gas a bit. They scored early in the period and that was a tough one to give up early. I thought Vancouver played a good game tonight, they played hard and our goaltending was really good, again, tonight. It was one of those games up for grabs and obviously we would have loved the two points, but we got a big point on the road.”
