2021-22 Rangers

Updates from the Rangers on Wednesday

Filip Chytil did not skate at Rangers practice today. He missed Monday’s game against Florida and is day to day. (NYR)

The lines used at practice today were (Walker):

  • Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Sammy Blais
  • Artemi Panarin, Ryan Strome, Kaapo Kakko
  • Alexis Lafreniere, Barclay Goodrow, Julien Gauthier
  • Dryden Hunt, Kevin Rooney, Ryan Reaves

Gerard Gallant spoke after practice and said (NYR):

  • “Obviously we worked hard in d-zone coverage this morning, trying to work on different things and when you play as many games as we did, and on the road, you don’t get a chance to practice, just some refreshers.”
  • Is it time for more video or longer practices, “a little bit of both, today is a good day for it, a perfect day. It wasn’t that much longer of a practice, you don’t want your players getting hurt and pulling groins and that, but they had a good day off yesterday, felt energized out there, we did some good high-tempo drills and we talked about a little bit of stuff, it’s all good.”
  • What is the mood in the room, “It’s awesome. Like I said, last game I was upset after the game, personally, because I thought we were playing the best team in the league and we let them back in that hockey game and we almost give away two points. It was a great game for 57-58 minutes and to then give them two goals late and a chance to tie that hockey game, we were pretty upset. Even though you get the two points, you get over that and wake up the next morning and say ‘we gotta be better than that, but we did get the two points again.’ Shesty was real good and we had some good points of the game, scored four beautiful goals and created some good chances, but it is what we are giving up that we have to take care of this week.”
  • Do you lean on the guys who have been here a while to pass on the message, “That is the whole group, it’s not just the veteran guys, it’s the whole group. It wasn’t just the last game, it was the last four games, I think we’ve given up 11 goals in in the last four periods and before that third periods were great for us. The first nine games we had great third periods and the last four periods, 3-3–3-2, it’s not acceptable and we know that and we hung on for a win and a tie in Edmonton and .500 in that stretch, but we have to be better than that.”
  • What do you need to see more of to prevent those chances, “It’s what we talked about, we get some practice time this week to fix things up and hopefully that will work because we are not that bad of a defensive team that we showed in the last few games, giving up those chances and our goaltender has to give up six goals a game or the way Shesty had to play the last game against Florida.”
  • Is it a collective issue, “100%.”
  • On Shesterkin not coming out to be the first star on Monday, “That was blown way out of proportion. He had the stomach flu, same as I had.”
  • Any update on Chytil, “I’m going to find out after practice, I thought he was possibly going to skate today, but obviously, he didn’t. I’ll find out more after practice but he is still day to day.”
  • Is there a chance he plays this weekend, “yea, I’m not saying, but there is a chance, definitely, still three days away.”
  • On 5 on 5 chances, “generating good scoring, but not near enough pucks to the net. As a coach you say that you wish you put more pucks to the net, there is no doubt, we need more shots to the net, but the chances we got last game were Grade A and the chances we got in the 6-0 loss to Calgary, you look back at them and there are four goals, Markstrom played an unbelievable game. I wish we had more shots, I wish we had 35 shots a game, but we gotta get to that sometime. We are creating real good chances.”
  • Was that a focus today, “get more to the net, more point shots to the net.”
